Yangzhou
Yangzhou is a prefecture-level city in the Chinese province of Jiangsu. It is located on the Yangtze River. Its administrative area covers 6,591 km² and has a population of 4,586,797. In 2024, the city of Yangzhou achieved a GDP of 780.964 billion yuan. Yangzhou is located about 290 km from Shanghai. It used to be an important hub for the salt trade. Thanks to its location directly on the Grand Canal, it became a very prosperous and powerful trading city in the Middle Ages. Marco Polo (allegedly) spent several years here as governor for the rulers of the Yuan dynasty.
